American dream under attack

Spring Hill, Fla. - Former candidate for president proclaims the American dream is under attack.

The Hernando County Republican Executive Committee hosted their annual Lincoln Day dinner at the Palace Grand.  Their nationally-renowned guest speaker said America is on a path of destruction.

Herman Cain, former Republican Presidential candidate, arrived late to the dinner, but did not disappoint the waiting crowd.  His speech began by saying American dream is under attack.

"We have become a nation of crisis," Cain said.  "Our biggest deficiency is the lack of leadership in Washington DC."

Cain said the Presidential election is the most important election in our life time. Indicating that history repeats itself with the arrogance of its leaders and too much government, he said we were on a path of destruction.    "America is at a crossroads," He said.

Urging everyone to stay focused, Cain said, "The main street media and the Democrats will flat-out lie to win this election.  It is important to stay involved, to elect people from the top of the ticket down to the local level"

Unique gimmick to get petition cards signed

Commentary
Anna Liisa Covell

One local candidate is trying a new twist to get his name on the ballot.  But he may have bitten off more than he can chew.

Stepping up to the plate late in the election process, Richard Matassa, candidate for Hernando County Commissioner, District 1 came up with a unique gimmick to get his petition cards signed to get his name on the ballot.

Matassa sent out a mass emailing with an offer - an offer to win a $50.00 gift certificate from Boston Cooker Restaurant for signing his petition card.  He plans on having a drawing of all the names submitted by petition card on April 26th to hand out three gift certificates.

Hernando County Supervisor of Elections office verified the legality of Matassa's petition raffle.  But the legality comes with certain requirements to be legal.

According to Florida Division of Elections, a candidate can ask people to sign petition cards with an incentive of a raffle prize.  But Matassa has to make the drawing open to anyone whether they signed a petition or not.

It will be interesting to see the size of the fish bowl Matassa uses to include every citizen in the county for his raffle drawing on April 26th.

Positive solutions to Nobleton's addressing issues

Nobleton, Fla. - Nobleton's back on the map.  Well, almost.

After three years of bureaucratic denial, addressing problems were solved  in less than three months after Hernando County Commissioners got involved in the process.  A joint meeting was suggested to brainstorm  ways to correct the addressing system in Nobleton.

At the suggestion of Commissioner David Russell, officials from U.S. Post Office were invited to the meeting, along with staff from Rep. Nugent's office, Hernando County Property Appraiser's office and Hernando County Planning Department.  Leading the meeting, County Commission Chairman Wayne Dukes was able to find positive solutions to the addressing debacle through constructive debate.

A map of Nobleton has been added to Hernando County Property Appraiser web site under Central Mapping.   The current map of Nobleton can be found using Census Data function.  Mapping will be updated when changes are completed for county comprehensive plan in the fall of 2012.

The Planning Department is working on Hernando County 2040 Plan . The target date for including historic mapping of communities, like Nobleton, into the Comprehensive Plan is scheduled for early fall 2012.

Dukes said all he wanted was a little common sense to fix the problem.  He was satisfied progress was being made to correct addressing issues in Nobleton.  But he stressed the comprehensive plans would complete the task with new maps in the fall.

Brooksville Visioning Committee meeting notice

Dear Brooksvillians and friends,

Our Brooksville Vision Foundation Stakeholders Council meeting will be held at Hernando Park, 1030 a.m., this Thursday, April 19 (day after tomorrow).    The purpose of the meeting is to have Cliff, Michael and Brent provide you a brief “point and show” summary of what has happened and will happen at the park in preparation for the Florida Blueberry festival.

There will be no published agenda or notice other than this email.

Please enter the park at the Library.  Do not park on Ft. Dade.  There should be ample parking at the City Hall parking lot and elsewhere nearby.  We’ll gather on the tennis court behind the Library and probably go no further than the court nearest the band shell.  I don’t expect we’ll be there more than about 30 minutes.

This is the last scheduled meeting of the Stakeholders Council before the festival.  If you do not yet have tickets for the many exciting events that will be held in the park, please get them at the event office at City Hall (see Michael).  I will award a one-and-only, extraordinarily fine bottle of 100% pure, chemical-free, homemade muscadine wine to the person who sells the most tickets (to be awarded after the festival).

So, for Thursday, bring your smiles, your questions and your self.

If you aren’t excited about this event and what it will mean to our community, you need to see a doctor!

See you there!

Political gamesmanship by Obama

Commentary
Anna Liisa Covell

It looks like a case of political gamesmanship at it's finest by creating the atmosphere to have mob-rule opinion take over in a Presidential election.

What better way to make the candidate look like a hero with his followers than to attack the decision before it becomes public, just in case it's not favorable.

If you're wondering what decision - it's the Supreme Court decision on President Barrack Obama's health care law due out in June.

Obama has come out swinging by saying, "a Supreme Court rejection would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress.”

Apparently, three branches of government are two too many for Obama.  He has taken it upon himself to attack 200-plus years of legal scholars who believe the decisions of the United States Supreme Court.

As a law professor, Obama has conveniently side-stepped the very case that made the Supreme Court  the arbiter between the President and Congress to decide what laws are constitutional in America.  In the case of Marbury v. Madison, the judicial branch gained equal power with the executive and legislative branches of government in our country.  Thus, a system of checks and balance was born to protect our Constitution.

Reverence should be shown to all nine Justices on the Supreme Court especially from our President and our Congress.  But Obama has quite literally taken it upon himself to be the judge and jury of decisions made by SCOTUS.  He openly attacked members of the Supreme Court for their decision on Citizens United vs. FEC  in a State of the Union Address.

Obama's public attacks are unprecedented for a sitting president - unprecedented because he knows SCOTUS doesn't get involved with political mudslinging.  The high court just has way too much class which is something Obama seems to lack in his character.

Discrediting the messenger has become the hallmark of the Obama administration.  They are quick to blame others without ever standing up for the truth in our country.  It's sad when the President needs to stoop so low to gain public favor.

Federal Appeals Court Judge Jerry Smith called the President's words into question by demanding the Justice Department respond to his court with a 3-page brief - a brief explaining the position of the Department of Justice and the President's opinion about the ability of judges to determine the constitutionality of laws.

It looks like Judge Smith just called check-mate to Obama's political gamesmanship to sway public opinion about the ability of SCOTUS.
