People are scratching their heads about Blueberry Festival

Commentary
Anna Liisa Covell

Do you have questions about the upcoming Blueberry Festival?  Don't feel alone because many people are scratching their heads for answers. Like ...

Why is all the work for the Blueberry Festival being done without a building permit or tree removal permit at Hernando Park on Fort Dade?

How much money is this event costing city taxpayers - money for city employees devoting numerous man hours working under the direction of the Blueberry Festival director since last July?

How much money have the organizers of the Blueberry Festival donated to the city for office space at city hall since last summer?

Have the organizers of the Blueberry Festival informed county government they intend to run a "Beer Garden" on a county parking lot?

Did the organizers of the event bother to tell county government officials they plan on installing Port-A-Potties on the county parking lot?

Why did the organizer of the Blueberry Festival say the road closure decision wasn't complete in a news report several weeks ago  when the Brooksville City Council approved it (road closures) by resolution at their December 19, 2011 meeting?

Why have so many people in Brooksville gotten upset at Blueberry Festival organizers?

Where are all the event attendees supposed to park since all the major roads into the city are being closed?

Who is providing security and oversight for all the vendor tents and art exhibits during the off-hours when the event is not open?

Will residential neighbors along Hale Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard be impacted by traffic diverted from US41 road closures for 2-1/2 days?

Will Blueberry Festival organizers compensate downtown business owners for loss of revenue because all the streets are closed in downtown area?

Has the city of Brooksville compiled a budgetary figure of costs for police and emergency services, like it does for every other event that takes place in the city?  And who is paying for these costs?

Does the count government realize the event organizers are planning on lining up Port-A-Potties along the front of the Library on Howell Avenue?

Have the event organizers posted a bond to relieve taxpayers of any liability during the event?

Why did Brooksville City Council members decide this event was worthy of city sponsorship while abandoning their support for the Kiwanis Christmas Parade,Veterans Appreciation Parade and events relating to Martin Luther King celebrations?

These are just a few concerns that have been floating around for weeks.  Hopefully, we will have answers sooner rather than later.

JOBS Act press release from Rep. Nugent

REP NUGENT:  “IT’S ABOUT TIME...”

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Following the House vote to concur in the Senate’s amendment to the JOBS Act, Rep. Rich Nugent issued the following statement:
“It’s about time.  Months ago, the House passed, in a series of near-unanimous votes, a set of bills designed to help small businesses raise private capital.  The Senate never debated them, never voted to amend them, never sent them to the President’s desk. It took the House passing them twice to persuade the Senate to act.  I suppose it’s better late than never, but for the millions of families out there who are desperately looking for action from Washington, this should have been done months ago.
“This is the way the process is supposed to work – we find bipartisan solutions, pass them, work out the differences between the House and Senate, and send it to the President.  If it can work here, however late it may be, it ought to be able to work on the other major challenges facing OUR country.”

Open House at HCREC

Commentary
Anna Liisa Covell

The open house to mark the new location of Hernando County Republican Executive Committee  was  a subdued affair - one with food, a few close friends and some politicians thrown into the mix.  The only thing missing was a few key people who are running for office, like James Adkins and Jeff Stabins.

The HCREC's new headquarters is located at the Killensworth Plaza on the truck bypass at SR50.  Although the space is small, it held a moderate size crowd on Friday night.  There was enough food for a small army - food like finger sandwiches and gooey chocolate brownies.

Chairman Blaise Ingoglia was on tap to greet everyone as they entered the hall. Alan Setelius was manning the guest book at the desk to make sure he had a record of all who came to visit their facilities.

Incumbent Commissioner John Druzbick was at the front entrance shaking hands and kissing babies.  I just made the part up about kissing babies, but John was kissing all the ladies as he greeted them at the door, unlike his opponent Jason Sager.  Sager was hanging out in the parking lot with Matt Foreman.  They both seemed to be oblivious to the people inside of HCREC headquarters.

It was nice to see Sally Daniels who is running for Hernando County Tax Collector.  I always assumed Sally was a Democrat because she is the deputy tax collector working under Juanita Sikes.  Geez, that will teach me to never assume anything about a person's political party.   It also reinforces my admiration for Juanita because she didn't allow partisanship to sway her position about her employees as tax collector.

Quiet, unassuming John Emerson was in attendance.  He's the guy who has all the answers at Hernando County Property Appraiser's office.  With the announced retirement of Alvin Mazourek, John has stepped up to the plate to run for the position of property appraiser.

Mark Caskie, candidate for Hernando County Supervisor of Elections has been like the energizer bunny.  According to his Facebook page, he is visiting all the campaign sites and clubs to get his message out.  He was the only candidate for SOE in attendance at the open house.

Petition cards lined the counter begging to be signed so candidates could get their name placed on the ballot.  Most all candidates who had cards to be signed were in attendance at the event except for James Adkins.

The meet and greet atmosphere of the open house proved to be a pleasant affair to catch up with old friend's like Frank Colletti and Jaz Zydenbos. Even though we've all grayed a bit around the temples, nothing much has changed in the world of Republican politics in Hernando County.

Local voice on Fox News

Spring Hill, Fla. - Is there a rising political media star in our midst?

The chairman of Hernando County Republican Executive Committee will become a regular contributor on Fox News Network.

Blaise Ingoglia will appear live on Fox News at noon debating against Sasha Burns.  She is a Democrat lobbyist who previously worked on the presidential campaign for Al Gore.

While competing with online news and social media  challenges of media convergence, Fox News has asked Ingoglia to be a regular contributor.

Cha-Ching with late fees

Hey business owners, April Fool's Day is the deadline.

A deadline for what? Why, filing tangible tax returns with  Hernando County Property Appraiser's office, that's what.

You say, "Wait a minute, I didn't get my forms from the property appraiser to file in a timely fashion."

Well, neither have many other businesses throughout the county.  Even some accountants are wondering if the property appraiser is intentionally creating a situation - a situation where businesses file late because it just slips their mind.

Seems plausible, doesn't it.  What better way to increase money into the county coffers in this slow economy.  Charge business owners late fees for not filing tangible tax returns on time.

So, if you don't want to hear the county property appraiser's cash register go 'cha-ching' with late fees and penalties, check your records before it's too late.

Here's the contact information:

Hernando County Property Appraiser
20 North Main Street, Room 463, Brooksville, Fl 34601-2893
Phone (352) 754-4190
Fax (352) 754-4198

The deadline for filing your DR-405 return is April 1. After April 1, Florida Statutes provide that late penalties be applied at 5% per month, but not to exceed 25%. A 15% penalty is required for unreported property and a 25% penalty if no return is filed. Extension request available (Tangible Personal Property Extension Instructions/Request Form).

Penalties will be applied to any non-filer whose TPP Just/Market Value exceeds the $25,000 exemption received in prior years. The penalty includes the taxes exempted as a result of wrongfully claiming the exemption plus 15% per annum and a penalty of 50% of the taxes exempted.

Important press release from Rep. Nugent's office

REP NUGENT:
“To violate the sanctity of such a place is appalling...”

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – After receiving word that headstones had been vandalized at Bushnell’s Florida National Cemetery, Rep. Rich Nugent (FL-05) issued the following statement:

“We are talking about the final resting place for members of the Armed Forces.  To violate the sanctity of such a place is appalling, and if early reports are accurate and that the attacks were indeed motivated by anti-Semitism and a hatred of religious freedom, it is an attack on the very liberties that these soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and Coast Guard gave their lives for.  It is unacceptable on so many levels.  I hope the authorities catch the vandals and that they catch them soon.”

Old Geezers Rejoice

Just for Fun
Anna Liisa Covell

Here's a short, metered poem I wrote ... I hope it brings a smile to your face this morning. Enjoy.

Old Geezers Rejoice

Chests sink, waists bulge, thin hair, old men bygone
Eyes puff, boobs sag, skin dries, aged girls, forlorn
Stand up, sing out, fight back, old farts, doggone
Life’s short, play hard, skid home, butt first airborne
